Would you know what to do when on a multi pitch climb and ....

  • you dropped your belay device?
  • you or your second fell off on overhanging rock and couldn't get back on the rock to climb up?
  • your friend who is leading falls off leading a pitch, what do you do to help ?
  • could you protect yourself and your friends whilst abseiling in multi pitch situations ?

If you don't -

Come and learn self-rescue skills!
The basic course is for climbers who wish to learn or improve their self-rescue skills.  It will progress logically from learning individual skill components, understanding each skills' utility, and then applying new skills properly in novel situations.
This course is for any single or multipitch climber who wishes to be able to solve crag problems, or take their climbing to more adventurous venues. As the techniques may be coached in a realistic situation a full understanding of leading and crag communication will be essential.
You should be happy to lead unsupervised, the grade is irrelevant.

Basic Self-Rescue Course one day course

This is a hands-on course.  You will not be lectured to endlessly, but instead asked to demonstrate the application of relevant skills.

Skills covered will be :

  • when and how to escape belays from above and below
  • when and how to use 3, 5, and 7:1 hauling systems
  • when and how to lower using various systems including knot passes
  • when and how to use second and leader rescue skills
  • Courses will be demanding and will run from 9:00 - 5:00 pm.
  • An equipment list will be provided  upon payment of deposit.

Advanced Self-Rescue two day course

For the climber that possesses the rescue skills requisite to basic self-rescue ( above ), this course will provide a chance to integrate the planning and execution of rescues in various common situations.  Emphasis will be placed on situation analysis leading to an efficient rescue plan, as well as the execution of rescue techniques.
Schedule:   The course is a two day course that is offered privately.  An equipment list will be provided  upon deposit. You will learn about the solutions and techniques which you might use to solve these and other problems that you might encounter on the crags and more advanced rope work to keep you safe and in control whilst out climbing.

The course will involve:
  • Anticipating problems
  • Sound basic ropework and stance management
  • Simple solutions for simple problems
  • Escaping from the system
  • Use of prussiks
  • Crag evacuation
  • Traverse problems

It is very important to build on what you are already familiar with. The course will be set at a standard and pace which fits your experience and aspirations. Once a climber has mastered the basic skills, most situations can be solved using each of the techniques as building blocks.
Courses to fit in with your life and time - we can run a self rescue for climbers course to suit you. It works best with two people, you and your climbing partner, but if you wish we can do it one to one.
